About the Album
Talking Heads' The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads documents the group's evolution from a lean New York art-punk quartet into a more rhythmically expansive ensemble. Originally released in 1982, the live album draws on performances from different stages of the band's early career, revealing how songs developed through touring and collaboration. The earlier recordings emphasize nervous, tightly arranged new wave, while the later performances incorporate additional musicians and Afrobeat-influenced interlocking rhythms. David Byrne's distinctive vocals and angular guitar approach sit within a sound that is both cerebral and danceable. Tracks such as “Psycho Killer” and “Life During Wartime” gain extra urgency in performance. The album is valued for capturing the group's creative growth rather than simply presenting a greatest-hits set.
