About the Album
Released in 1977, Styx's The Grand Illusion is one of the band's defining albums, balancing progressive-rock ambition with concise, memorable songwriting. “Come Sail Away” builds from a keyboard-led introduction into a powerful rock climax, while “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)” combines a distinctive rhythmic feel with a message about perspective and self-awareness. The title track considers fame, image, and the difference between appearance and reality. Dennis DeYoung's keyboards and vocals are complemented by the guitar work and harmonies of Tommy Shaw and James Young, creating a sound that is both polished and dramatic. The album helped establish Styx as a major force in American arena rock and remains a central entry in the group's catalog.
