About the Album
Styx's Cornerstone, released in 1979, brings the band's progressive-rock background together with a polished, radio-friendly approach. The album moves between melodic rock, keyboard-driven arrangements, and more reflective songs, showcasing the contrasting writing styles within the group. “Babe” became one of Styx's best-known ballads, while “Borrowed Time” and “Why Me” retain the band's layered harmonies and dramatic instrumental character. Dennis DeYoung's keyboards and theatrical sensibility sit alongside the rock guitar work of Tommy Shaw and James Young, giving the record a broad musical range. Cornerstone marked an important commercial moment for Styx and demonstrates how the band adapted its ambitious sound to the late-1970s arena-rock landscape.
