About the Album
Miles Davis's Sketches of Spain, released in 1960, pairs his trumpet with orchestral arrangements by Gil Evans, drawing on Spanish classical and folk music. The album's centerpiece, “Concierto de Aranjuez,” transforms Joaquín Rodrigo's guitar concerto into a spacious, emotionally charged setting for Davis's distinctive tone. Other pieces, including “Will o' the Wisp” and “The Pan Piper,” combine orchestral color with jazz phrasing and carefully shaped dynamics. Rather than a conventional small-group jazz session, the record creates a cinematic sound world in which the orchestra and solo trumpet interact as equal voices. Sketches of Spain is one of Davis's most ambitious collaborations with Evans and a major work in orchestral jazz.
