About the Album
John Mellencamp's The Lonesome Jubilee, released in 1987, expands his heartland rock sound with folk and roots-music instruments, including fiddle, accordion, mandolin, and dulcimer. The arrangements give the songs a distinctly American, small-town atmosphere while keeping the rhythm section and electric guitars firmly rooted in rock. “Paper in Fire” opens with a driving groove and a memorable fiddle line, while “Check It Out” reflects on work, family, and the choices people make over a lifetime. Mellencamp's direct vocal delivery and detailed storytelling are central to the album's character. Produced by Mellencamp and Don Gehman, the record helped define the more roots-oriented direction of his late-1980s work and became one of the most acclaimed albums of his career.
