About the Album
Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Brain Salad Surgery, released in 1973, is one of the defining albums of progressive rock. The trio combines Keith Emerson's virtuosic keyboards, Greg Lake's melodic bass and vocals, and Carl Palmer's precise, powerful drumming in a set that moves between elaborate compositions and concise rock songs. “Jerusalem” reworks the English hymn with a dramatic arrangement, while “Toccata” adapts classical material into a high-energy instrumental. The album's centerpiece, “Karn Evil 9,” is an extended multi-part suite that combines futuristic themes with shifting musical styles and intricate performances. With its ambitious arrangements and distinctive cover art, Brain Salad Surgery captures ELP at the height of its compositional and technical ambition.
