About the Album
On the Road, released in 1973, documents Traffic's live performances during a period when the group excelled at stretching its songs through improvisation and ensemble interplay. Steve Winwood's vocals and keyboards, Jim Capaldi's percussion, and Chris Wood's saxophone and flute help create a fluid sound that moves between rock, blues, jazz, and soul. The set draws on material from the band's early-1970s catalog, allowing familiar songs to develop into longer performances with shifting rhythms and instrumental exchanges. Rather than reproducing the studio arrangements note for note, Traffic uses the concert setting to emphasize groove and spontaneity. This live album is a valuable snapshot of the band's musicianship and its distinctive approach to performance.
