About the Album
Rush's Hemispheres, released in 1978, continues the narrative and musical ideas introduced on A Farewell to Kings. The first side is occupied by “Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres,” an ambitious suite that explores a conflict between reason and emotion through elaborate musical sections and philosophical lyrics. The second side includes “Circumstances,” the instrumental “La Villa Strangiato,” and other material that balances direct rock energy with intricate playing. Neil Peart's lyrics and drumming, Geddy Lee's high-register vocals and bass, and Alex Lifeson's guitar work create the band's characteristic combination of precision and intensity. Hemispheres is often regarded as one of Rush's most technically demanding albums and a defining example of late-1970s progressive rock.
