About the Album
Grand Funk Railroad's We're an American Band, released in 1973, brought the group a more polished production while retaining its direct, hard-driving rock identity. Produced by Todd Rundgren, the album features a tighter, more focused sound than some of the band's earlier recordings. The title track became a major hit, celebrating the group's life on the road with a chant-like chorus and an unmistakable groove. “The Railroad” and other tracks show the band's blend of blues-rooted guitar, muscular bass and drums, and Mark Farner's forceful vocals. The album helped Grand Funk reach a wider audience and remains one of the best-known releases in its catalog, capturing the scale and confidence of American hard rock in the early 1970s.
