About the Album
Genesis released Duke in 1980, combining the band's progressive-rock roots with a more direct, song-oriented approach that would shape much of its later work. The album features strong keyboard textures, detailed arrangements, and a balance between dramatic passages and concise pop-rock writing. “Turn It On Again” is built around an unusual rhythmic pattern and an instantly recognizable hook, while “Misunderstanding” presents a more straightforward melodic side. The record also contains connected sections associated with the “Duke” suite, reflecting the group's continuing interest in longer musical structures. Phil Collins's vocals, Tony Banks's keyboards, and Mike Rutherford's guitar and bass work give the album its distinctive character. Duke is a key transition in Genesis's evolution during the early 1980s.
