About the Album
Billy Joel's Turnstiles, released in 1976, reflects a major transition in the singer-songwriter's career. After returning to New York, Joel wrote songs that look at city life, ambition, nostalgia, and personal change with vivid detail and a strong melodic sense. “New York State of Mind” became one of his signature performances, while “Say Goodbye to Hollywood” and “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)” show his ability to build cinematic stories into pop-rock songs. The album blends piano-led songwriting with arrangements influenced by rock, jazz, and classic pop. Its personal perspective and varied musical palette make Turnstiles an important bridge between Joel's earlier work and the more expansive albums that followed.
