About the Album
Steely Dan's Pretzel Logic, released in 1974, refines the band's blend of rock, jazz, and sophisticated pop into concise, carefully arranged songs. “Rikki Don't Lose That Number” became a major hit, pairing a relaxed groove with an instantly recognizable guitar figure, while “Any Major Dude Will Tell You” offers a gentler, reflective mood. Donald Fagen's keyboards and vocals and Walter Becker's guitar and songwriting are supported by detailed arrangements and a highly skilled group of session musicians. The album also includes a striking version of Duke Ellington's “East St. Louis Toodle-Oo,” showing the band's interest in jazz history. Pretzel Logic is a key step in Steely Dan's move toward the precise studio craft that defined its later work.
