About the Album
Rush's A Farewell to Kings, released in 1977, expands the band's progressive-rock approach through intricate arrangements, shifting time signatures, and a mix of electric and acoustic textures. The title track explores themes of social decline and human responsibility, while “Closer to the Heart” became one of the group's most enduring songs with its concise structure and memorable chorus. The album also includes the extended “Xanadu,” which moves through atmospheric introductions and complex instrumental sections, and “Cygnus X-1,” a science-fiction epic that continues on the next album. Geddy Lee's bass and keyboards, Alex Lifeson's guitar, and Neil Peart's detailed drumming create a sound that is both technical and expressive. A Farewell to Kings is a central work in Rush's classic 1970s period.
