About the Album
R.E.M.'s Fables of the Reconstruction (1985) is the band's third studio album and one of its most atmospheric early works. Recorded in England with producer Joe Boyd, it draws on Southern American imagery, folk traditions, and a mysterious mood. Peter Buck's jangling guitar, Mike Mills's melodic bass, and Michael Stipe's cryptic vocal delivery create songs that feel intimate and elusive. “Driver 8” is among the album's most accessible tracks, while “Maps and Legends” reveals the band's oblique storytelling. The album helped establish R.E.M. as a distinctive voice in alternative rock before its later mainstream breakthrough.
