About the Album
Pet Shop Boys' Actually, released in 1987, refined the duo's combination of electronic production, sharp pop melodies, and Neil Tennant's observational lyrics. The album includes “It's a Sin,” a dramatic synth-pop single with a large-scale arrangement, and “What Have I Done to Deserve This?,” a duet with Dusty Springfield that connects contemporary dance-pop with classic pop vocal tradition. “Rent” offers a more subdued, emotionally ambiguous portrait of a relationship. Chris Lowe's synthesizer-driven arrangements and Tennant's measured delivery give the record a cool, precise character even when the music becomes theatrical. Actually followed the success of the group's debut and helped establish Pet Shop Boys as one of the defining acts of late-1980s British synth-pop.
