About the Album
Focus's Moving Waves, released in 1971, is one of the best-known albums by the Dutch progressive-rock group. It combines instrumental virtuosity with a distinctive mixture of rock, jazz, classical influences, and playful musical experimentation. The album's signature piece, “Hocus Pocus,” moves between rapid-fire yodeling, flute, guitar riffs, and rhythmic breaks, creating an unusual but highly memorable performance. “Eruption” is a longer suite that demonstrates the group's ability to build extended instrumental structures with changing moods and textures. Jan Akkerman's guitar and Thijs van Leer's keyboards and flute are central to the band's sound, supported by a flexible rhythm section. Moving Waves remains a distinctive example of early-1970s European progressive rock, balancing technical skill with humor and spontaneity.
