About the Album
David Bowie's Young Americans, released in 1975, marked a major departure from his glam-rock period, embracing Philadelphia soul, R&B, and a polished, rhythm-focused sound Bowie described as “plastic soul.” The title track combines social observation with a sweeping soul arrangement, while “Fame,” co-written with John Lennon and guitarist Carlos Alomar, became Bowie's first US number-one single. “Fascination,” developed with Luther Vandross, highlights the album's close connection to contemporary soul music. The performances feature expressive backing vocals, tight grooves, and a more naturalistic vocal style than Bowie's earlier theatrical work. Young Americans documents a pivotal transformation in his career and helped broaden his audience in the United States.
