About the Album
Cream's debut album, Fresh Cream, released in 1966, helped establish the power trio format as a force in British rock. Eric Clapton's blues-rooted guitar, Jack Bruce's melodic bass and distinctive vocals, and Ginger Baker's dynamic drumming create a sound that moves between electric blues, psychedelic rock, and extended improvisation. “I Feel Free” combines a tight pop structure with layered vocal harmonies, while “Spoonful” and “I'm So Glad” stretch the blues into heavier, more exploratory performances. The album captures Cream at the point when the musicians were bringing virtuoso playing into a concise rock format, while hinting at the longer jams that would become a feature of their live shows. Fresh Cream remains a foundational release in the development of blues rock and early hard rock.
