About the Album
Released in 1980, Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell introduced vocalist Ronnie James Dio, ushering in a new era for the band. Tony Iommi's heavy guitar riffs remain at the center, but Dio's powerful, dramatic voice and fantasy-inflected lyrics give the music a different character from the Ozzy Osbourne years. The title track builds from a measured opening into an epic heavy-metal performance, while “Neon Knights” launches the album with fast, focused energy. Geezer Butler's bass and Bill Ward's drumming provide a strong foundation for the band's dark atmosphere and dynamic arrangements. Heaven and Hell revitalized Black Sabbath and became a major influence on the development of 1980s heavy metal.
