About the Album
ZZ Top's Afterburner, released in 1985, follows the success of Eliminator by combining the band's blues-rock foundation with synthesizers, sequenced rhythms, and a polished mid-1980s production style. “Sleeping Bag” and “Stages” became prominent singles, pairing Billy Gibbons's gritty guitar tone with danceable grooves and catchy choruses. The album retains the group's Texas-blues character, but its arrangements are more electronic and streamlined than those of the band's earlier records. Dusty Hill's bass and Frank Beard's drums anchor the tracks while Gibbons's guitar remains the defining voice. Afterburner demonstrates how ZZ Top adapted its sound for the MTV era without abandoning the riffs and dry humor that made the group distinctive.
