About the Album
Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool collects recordings made in 1949 and 1950 by a nonet exploring a more arranged, orchestral approach to modern jazz. Moving away from the fast intensity of bebop, the music uses carefully voiced horns, subtle dynamics, and contrapuntal arrangements to create a spacious sound. Pieces such as “Move,” “Boplicity,” and “Moon Dreams” illustrate the balance of precision and lyricism associated with cool jazz. The sessions feature musicians including Gerry Mulligan and Lee Konitz, with Gil Evans's arranging influence and Davis's restrained trumpet tone at the center. Birth of the Cool is a landmark in Davis's early career and a major influence on postwar jazz arranging.
