About the Album
Chicago's Chicago III, released in 1971, is a double album that expands the band's mix of rock, jazz, and brass-driven arrangements through a more ambitious set of compositions. It includes a series of linked pieces and extended instrumental passages, reflecting the group's interest in both song-based writing and larger musical structures. Terry Kath's guitar, Robert Lamm's keyboards, the rhythm section, and the horn players create a sound that can shift from forceful rock to intricate ensemble arrangements. The album's scale and variety make it one of Chicago's more exploratory early releases, preceding the more concise hit-driven approach of later records. Chicago III offers a snapshot of the band when its jazz-rock identity and collective songwriting were still developing rapidly.
