About the Album
The Bangles' Different Light, released in 1986, helped transform the group from a Los Angeles club-scene band into an international pop-rock success. The album combines jangling guitars, bright vocal harmonies, and polished production influenced by both 1960s pop and mid-1980s radio. “Manic Monday,” written by Prince under a pseudonym, became a major hit, while “If She Knew What She Wants” and “Walk Like an Egyptian” show the band's range from melodic guitar pop to playful, rhythm-driven pop. The group members' vocal blend and instrumental interplay give the record more character than a conventional studio pop production. Different Light is a defining release of the Bangles' career and a strong example of 1980s guitar-based pop.
