About the Album
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Hard Promises, released in 1981, follows the success of Damn the Torpedoes with a collection of concise, melodic rock songs. Petty's direct songwriting and conversational vocal style are supported by Mike Campbell's economical guitar work and the band's relaxed but precise rhythm section. “The Waiting” became one of the group's best-known songs, built around a chiming guitar figure and a memorable chorus. The album balances jangling rock with reflective lyrics about relationships, persistence, and everyday life. Its clear, unforced sound helped establish Tom Petty as one of the leading American rock songwriters of the early 1980s.
