About the Album
Gary Numan's The Pleasure Principle, released in 1979, is a landmark of electronic pop and new wave. Built largely around synthesizers, sequencers, and tightly controlled rhythms, the album creates a cool, futuristic atmosphere that differed sharply from conventional guitar-led rock of the time. “Cars” became an international hit, with its repetitive synth hook and detached vocal delivery, while “Metal” and “M.E.” explore darker, more mechanical textures. Numan's use of electronic instruments helped bring synthesizer-based music into the mainstream and influenced later synth-pop and industrial artists. The Pleasure Principle remains one of his defining works and a key release in the development of electronic rock.
